WHY

​

The organization of the workplace using 5S methodology helps to achieve stability and to control variability in order to improve continuously. 5S implementation create a safe and comfortable working environment. Improve productivity, quality and delivery. It permit to develop mindset for conforming company standards and culture

WHAT
​

The factory must be based on a stable structure which depends on the process control, the organization of space, cleaning machines... For a stable structure, we can use the 5S methodology. This method is fundamental for organizing a functional workplace.

  • It is a way to realize a tidy, clean, safe and comfortable working environment

  • It is a tool for eliminating Muda (wastages) in workshop.

With this effective tool, we can detect our problems/things not in order easily to take immediate actions back to respect defined standard.

The 5S only stay in the factories where assessments are carried out and where leaders based their routine on it.

HOW

  1. Workshop preparation: Gather in the perimeter all materials you need, to do a 5S workshop (Post it, tools, markers, scissors,...)

  2. From collected problems/feedbacks, define the area to analysze through 5S methodology. Limit the perimeter to be efficient.

  3. Identify a 5S leader for that perimeter

  4. Involve everyone working in this area. Provide a 5S training to participants to the workshop.

  5. Before to start, together with involved people, rethink about the sense of the area (this area is used for what?), identify with them the expected benefits from the workshop and fix measurable targets (place saving, stock reduction, elimination of dangerous situations). Then to run 5S methodology we advise you to follow the available template in best practice just below

  6. Sort: Sort the useless from the useful and put away from the workplace. The frequency of use is a good criteria for sorting and to set in order. (eg >6 months = Discard, >1month = Put away, <1 week = Close by, within the cycle time = 100% available)

  7. Set in order: Put everything in a dedicated place

  8. Standardize storage to make the setting rules obvious: Cleaning rules, set up visual management

  9. Sustain: Maintain a discipline of order and cleanliness thanks to regular assessments. Let the assessment result visible to all. Define the frequency and routine's leader name. If issues/abnormalities go back to step 4.

  10. Implement a routine to challenge the 5S standard you are using.
